From the District Governor

I attended the first Changeover of the season on June 4 in Renmark where I had the pleasure of seeing outgoing President Paul Martin induct incoming President David Aitchison (pictured below).  It is hard to believe that a whole year has passed since I attended the Rotary Club of Renmark’s Changeover last year.

So much great work has been accomplished over the past year in all of our Clubs across the District and I am sure as we enter this Changeover period there will be many reasons to pause and celebrate these achievements together.

This will also be a time to recognise the achievements of individuals in our Clubs through the bestowing of Paul Harris Fellows and Club awards.  We are surrounded by remarkable people in our Clubs and two of our Rotary colleagues were recognised last weekend in the Queen’s Birthday Honours - Dr Peter Dry AM (Rotary Club of Mitcham) and Robert Handley OAM (Rotary Club of Hyde Park) - congratulations on this wonderful recognition!

If there are other Rotarians honoured in these awards that we have overlooked please let us know so we can acknowledge them in our next newsletter.

This is also a time to remember our friends in Rotary who have left us this year - friends like Mina Ward, a Past President of the Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise and former member of the District’s Youth Committee who tragically and suddenly passed away last week in Darwin.  Mina spoke at our District’s Conference in Mount Gambier in 2017 - who could forget her standing on stage with her bathing cap on as she talked about her dream to swim the English Channel.  Mina never had the opportunity to make that swim, but she did make a lasting and positive impact on her Rotary friends here in Adelaide.  Our thoughts go out to her loved ones at this sad time.

As this will be the last Herald for this Rotary year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Editor Rod Cooper for his hard work, his patience and his commitment to delivering an informative and interesting Herald each month for the benefit of Rotarians in our District.  Rod gave the Herald a slightly different look and feel this year and I have been very grateful for his enthusiasm and humour.  This is also Rod’s last issue as Editor as he takes on the role of Club President 2019-2020 for the Rotary Club of Mount Barker - all the very best Rod!

Thank you also to everyone who contributed content throughout the year - it would be a very short read without you.

In the past 12 months we have gone from ‘Making a Difference’ to ‘Be the Inspiration’.  I have had the great privilege of witnessing Rotarians and Rotary Clubs live out both of these themes as Rotary continues to change the world for the better.

The Rotary Foundation and International
End Polio Campaign - 'Stay the Course'

Bill Gates was just a few months old when the first polio vaccine was developed in 1955. Now the American philanthropist is at the forefront with Rotary in the fight against polio. He used a district conference in Spokane, Washington, USA, to thank Rotarians for their leadership and dedication to eradicate the disease from the planet.

“Never, never, never give up. So long as Rotary members continue to believe that - so long as we never give up - then polio does not stand a chance.”
