From the District Governor
Welcome to the August issue of the Herald.  I am writing this message from Broken Hill where Paul and I are visiting with Rotarians for our official Club visit and to progress plans for the Conference to be held here 5-7 April 2019.  Broken Hill, like many of our rural communities in our District, are feeling the impact of this devastating drought, so it was welcome news that Rotary Australia has partnered with Channel 9 and the National Farmers Federation to launch a campaign to assist affected farmers and farming communities.  This campaign is not only a great opportunity for us as Rotarians to show our support for these communities but it also provides us with a platform to further raise our profile as People of Action.  I am asking Rotary Clubs to consider how you might support this fundraising campaign - perhaps through allocating proceeds from one of your upcoming Bunnings BBQ or Shed Sales or a local fundraiser.  In whatever way you might decide to support this campaign I ask you to please promote Rotary’s role as a significant partner, our ongoing commitment to our local communities, and the opportunities that we can provide for others to join us in service.

Tip of the Month
Be ready to talk about Rotary
Any person your club members talk to — a friend, a family member, a coworker, a customer at your sausage sizzle — could be a future Rotarian. Make sure everyone in your club can talk about Rotary effectively. How? At one of your upcoming club meetings ask a few members to act out a prospective member pitch. Work together to refine delivery and highlight strategies that empower everyone to talk about Rotary, your experience in Rotary and your club. Make your pitch personal — words spoken from the heart always come across as genuine and you don’t need to remember a script which can sound less engaging.
