From the District Governor
It was wonderful to see a very enthusiastic group of Rotarians in attendance at last weekend’s District Assembly, sharing information and ideas and connecting with other Rotarians across the District – well done to DGE Tim, PDG Wendy and the learning and development team for delivering an informative and engaging event.
May is Youth Service Month and this issue includes an update on the youth programs in our District.
I had the pleasure of meeting two alumni of our Metro RYPEN program at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Mount Barker.  In presenting their experience at RYPEN it was obvious that their Rotary experience has had an extremely positive impact on Lucy and Kingsley.
At the same meeting the Club celebrated the 90th birthday of member Ron Batt and his almost 50 years of service to Rotary.  What a terrific opportunity to show younger people that Rotary can contribute to our personal and professional growth throughout our entire life.
At this time of the year when Clubs are planning Changeovers and programs for the coming year I ask that Rotarians consider how they can continue to engage with and support their alumni from youth and other Rotary programs.
Congratulations to alumna Ashlee Leach (RYPEN, NYSF, One and All Sailing Experience), who has been selected to attend the London International Youth Science Forum.  Ashlee spoke at our recent District Conference and is a great ambassador for our Youth programs – if you would like to assist Ashlee in raising finds to get her to London there is further information included in this issue.
We continue to look at opportunities to work with our fellow Rotarians in District 9500 – in just a little over a year we will all be a part of an exciting new District 9510 so getting to know each other a little better is an important part of the journey of coming together.  There are two initiatives highlighted in this issue – the Women in Rotary 30 year anniversary project and the Mentoring Program – both providing this opportunity to connect.
Our DG newsletter coming out at the end of this month will provide a wrap up of our successful Group Study Exchange with District 6040 as well as other Club, District and RI happenings during the month of May.  If you would like to share your Club’s achievements please forward information and photos to by May 16.
I was delighted to see District and Club initiatives showcased in three Rotary publications – our Membership Forums included in Rotary on the Move, the success of the Ocean to the Outback Bike Ride highlighted in the Australian Rotary Health newsletter, and the Rotary Club of McLaren Vale’s Mock Accident program featured in the May issue of Rotary Down Under.  Well done to all involved in those projects.  Great examples of People of Action striving to ‘Be the Inspiration’.
DG Kim
