From the District Governor
With one third of our Rotary year completed there has already been a great deal for us to celebrate.  Thank you for the terrific fundraising efforts for Australian Rotary Health’s Lift the Lid and the End Polio Now campaign.  As I recently quoted from one of Queen’s songs at the recent Bohemian Rhapsody movie fundraiser - “We are the champions my friends, and we’ll keep on fighting til the end” - it is a reminder that we must continue to be champions in our fight to eradicate polio and do so until we finish the job.  Even though World Polio Day has passed I encourage Clubs to continue to look at ways to raise funds for and awareness of this program all year round.  There are so many great causes for Clubs to support and I am pleased to see that our Rotary programs are high on your list.  Paul and I continue to enjoy meeting with Rotarians around the District, and with 42 Club visits under our belt so far we are in fact having to loosen our belts to accomodate all those lovely meals we are sharing with friends at meetings.  I have also enjoyed attending Club events and projects that connect people in our local communities - such as the Rotary Club of Goolwa’s Open Garden and the Rotary Club of Mitcham’s recently relocated bookshop.  The Rotary car, generously supplied by Paradise Motors, will be promoting Rotary at some upcoming events in November including the famous Duck Race organised by the Rotary Club of Strathalbyn and several Christmas Pageants in Mobilong, Stirling and Norwood.
And don’t forget that the deadline for the early bird registration for the District Conference in Broken Hill (5-7 April 2019) is December 31st.
Keep up the great work as you continue to Be the Inspiration!

Tip of the Month
Would you like to get some further publicity out of your financial support for great causes?  The District has purchased two large reusable Rotary branded cheques that can be used by Clubs and Committees for photo and event opportunities.  The Rotary Club of St Peters recently used one of these cheques when it presented $10,000 to the RSB/RSL K9 Program. These cheques are stored at the District sheds in Brighton, along with other resources such as pull up banners and event signage, and can be booked through the District Property Officer John Yard at johnryard@gmail.com or the District Secretary Peter Hammond at peter_h@bigpond.net.au.

Membership
Reconnecting with Rotary Alumni
In the August issue of the Herald there was a tip about reconnecting with Rotary alumni.  One of those tips was to invite alumni (e.g., former Rotarians/Club members, participants in youth programs, GSE etc.) to special occasions organised by Clubs.  As we approach the end of the year many Clubs will be holding a special Christmas meeting where alumni could be invited to attend as part of our wider Rotary family.  Or you may wish to ask alumni to be involved in assisting your Club in a project that lifts the spirits of others in our community - whether that is providing a meal or a care package for the homeless, preparing hampers at Foodbank, or cooking a BBQ at your local Christmas Carols.  Getting people involved is the best way to demonstrate what Rotary has to offer.

Polio Update
Our total for the year is now 25:– 19 in Afghanistan, compared with 8 for the same period last year; and 6 in Pakistan (5 last year). Still no cases in Nigeria.

Please click here to read the Times article co-written by our RI President Barry Rassin and World Health Organisation Director General Dr Adhanom Ghebreyesus that really provides a wonderful overview of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
