From the District Governor

February 23 is the day we celebrate Rotary’s anniversary.  Over the past seven months I have seen Rotarians in Clubs across our District come together to celebrate, to recognise others and to support their friends in Rotary.  I have felt so privileged in recent weeks to have been included in moments that are significant to Rotarians and their families.  I have heard touching words from Rotarians as they deliver eulogies, I have seen the look of friendship on the faces of Rotarians celebrating milestone birthdays at Club meetings, and the recognition and respect shown to charter members at Club anniversaries.

Many Clubs have happy and sad dollars as part of their meetings where Rotarians can share some of those moments in their life that are important to them on a personal level.  As Rotarians we not only support people outside of our organisation but we care for our friends in our Club - our Rotary family.  With one in five Australians aged 16-85 experiencing a mental illness in any year, that means there is likely to be at least one person sitting at your table at your Club meeting who needs our support.  This realisation was the catalyst for the Rotary Club of Victor Harbor to raise awareness and funds for mental health research through their Ocean to the Outback Bike Ride.  As someone who has lived with depression and anxiety for most of my life I am 110% behind this initiative and I encourage you and your Club to consider supporting this terrific project and in doing so support our own Rotary charity Australian Rotary Health (details in this newsletter).

Together we can make great things happen

Be the Inspiration!

Tip of the Month
District Conferences are a great way to meet other Rotarians, learn more about Rotary programs and be inspired by speakers with amazing stories.  There has been wonderful support from Rotarians for our District’s Conference in Broken Hill however there are many Rotarians who will be unable to attend due to travel or work commitments.

I encourage Rotarians to consider attending the District 9500 Conference ‘Into the Twenties’ to be held in Hahndorf, March 29-31.

For further details and to register visit the 9500 Conference website at  http://hahndorf2019.org.au/
