From the District Governor
Hold on to your hats - literally!  Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is Australian Rotary Health’s (ARH) annual fundraising day for mental health research.  Each year approximately 1-in-5 Australians will experience a mental illness and in order to help future generations of young Australians, we need to look ahead through research for prevention and support.  There are many ways to support this research including holding a Hat Day, attend the ARH High Tea this coming Sunday or support the Bike Ride from Victor Harbor to Broken Hill next year before the District Conference.  October 24 is World Polio Day - in this last week we were informed that there had been another case of the wild polio virus in Afghanistan, bringing the total of cases this year to 19.  Rotary, along with our partners in this significant campaign, are working harder than ever to eradicate polio from the face of the earth - to prevent one more child from ever knowing the devastating impact of this disease.  We must remain focused and committed to completing our goal of making history by dropping to zero.  I encourage you and your Club to support this campaign by attending one of the several screenings of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' at cinemas across our District.  Promote these events to non Rotarians and let people know about Rotary’s significant role in this global campaign.
Together, we can Be the Inspiration!

Tip of the Month
RI President Barry Rassin is asking all Rotarians to raise awareness in the wider community about the End Polio campaign and Rotary’s role in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  In order for us to talk about this campaign we need to be informed. There is a brilliant article 'The Annotated Guide to Ending Polio' on page 44 of the October Rotary Down Under magazine - it gives you relevant, concise and eye-opening stats on what this campaign is all about, where the funds are allocated, how we are tracking our progress and how we plan to keep the world polio-free forever.  Consider what you will do with this magazine when you have finished reading it - perhaps pass it on to your local health clinic to place in the waiting room, or display it at your next fundraising BBQ or event. Of course our most effective marketing resource is YOU so be informed and be prepared.
